Peasants and Globalization: A New Book From Two CASID Members

In 2007, for the first time in human history, a majority of the world’s
population lived in cities. However, on a global scale, poverty
overwhelmingly retains a rural face. This book assembles an unparalleled
group of internationally-eminent scholars in the field of rural
development and social change in order to explore historical and
contemporary processes of agrarian change and transformation and their
consequent impact upon the livelihoods, poverty and well-being of those
who live in the countryside. The book provides a critical analysis of
the extent to which rural development trajectories have in the past and
are now promoting a change in rural production processes, the
accumulation of rural resources, and shifts in rural politics, and the
implications of such trajectories for peasant livelihoods and rural
workers in an era of globalization.

Peasants and Globalization thus explores continuity and change in the
debate on the ‘agrarian question’, from its early formulation in the
late 19th century to the continuing relevance it has in our times,
including chapters from Terence Byres, Amiya Bagchi, Ellen Wood, Farshad
Araghi, Henry Bernstein, Saturnino M Borras, Ray Kiely, Michael Watts
and Philip McMichael. Collectively, the contributors argue that
neoliberal social and economic policies have, in deepening the market
imperative governing the contemporary world food system, not only failed
to tackle to underlying causes of rural poverty but have indeed deepened
the agrarian crisis currently confronting the livelihoods of peasant
farmers and rural workers. This crisis does not go unchallenged, as
rural social movements have emerged, for the first time, on a
transnational scale. Confronting development policies that are unable to
reduce, let alone eliminate, rural poverty, transnational rural social
movements are attempting to construct a more just future for the world’s
farmers and rural workers.

Marie-Monique Robin. Ce film est un regard provocateur sur puissance
hégémonique de Monsanto Corporation.

Madame Robin répondra aux questions du public à la fin de la
projection. L’admission est gratuite, mais nous vous encourageons à
faire un don de denrées non périssables ou d’argent sur place. Les
dons seront versés à la banque alimentaire de l’Université d’Ottawa.

A special screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Le monde
selon Monsanto/The world according to Monsanto will take place on
Wednesday September 17th, 2008. This film is provocative look at the
hegemonic power of the Monsanto Corporation throughout the world, and
touches on many issues that you as development students may confront
during in many of your courses.

The film’s producer, Marie Monique Robin will also be in attendance
and will lead a discussion of the themes and issues brought forward
during the film, many of which are relevant to the study of
international development and globalization. Admission is free,
however, small donations (including nonperishable food items) will be
collected and all donations will be given to the University of
Ottawa’s Student Food Bank.

This event was organized by the University of Ottawa’s School of
International Development and Global Studies and by the Student
Federation of the University of Ottawa.

capacity-development

program for rural economic growth, social inclusion and sound environmental
governance for 10 countries in Latin America. The program is led by Rimisp -
Latin American Center for Rural Development – with financial support from
the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Julio Berdegué is one of the leading experts on rural development in Latin
America and has been a key figure in the emerging topic of rural territorial
development. He is a frequent consultant and collaborator with leading
international organizations such as the World Bank, Inter-America
Development Bank, FAO, IFAD and the CGIAR.

What are the types of policies that can effectively promote rural dynamics
that lead to economic growth, social inclusion and sound environmental
governance? Why do some territories enjoy virtuous growth while most do
not? How might development funds be channelled into territorial programs
more effectively.

Join Dr. Berdegué for what promises to be an engaging discussion on rural
development issues in Latin American. The program and its partners are also
interested in learning about rural issues in Canada and in identifying
experiences, organizations and individuals with whom it would be fruitful to

Dynamiques territoriales rurales en Amérique latine: Pour une croissance
économique dans un environnement durable et avec inclusion sociale

Le Programme sur les dynamiques territoriales rurales est fondé sur la
recherche et vise la prestation de conseils en matière de politiques et le
renforcement de capacités afin de contribuer à la croissance économique des
régions rurales, à l’inclusion sociale et à une saine gouvernance de
l’environnement dans une dizaine de pays de l’Amérique latine. Le programme
est dirigé par Rimisp – Centre latino-américain pour le développement rural
– et compte sur l’appui financier du Centre de recherches pour le
développement international (CRDI).

Le CRDI organise un séminaire avec le conférencier invité, M. Julio A.
Berdegué, Coordinateur du Programme de Rimisp sur les dynamiques

mondiale, la Banque inter-américaine de développement, la FAO, le FIDA et le
CGIAR.

Quels genres de politiques peuvent effectivement promouvoir des dynamiques
rurales conduisant à une croissance économique, l’inclusion sociale et une
saine gouvernance de l’environnement ? Comment expliquer que certains
territoires jouissent d’une croissance virtuelle alors que la plupart ne le
font pas ? Comment peut-on canaliser des fonds pour le développement plus
efficacement dans des programmes territoriaux ?

Venez écouter M. Berdegué sur ce qui promet d’être une rencontre
enrichissante sur des enjeux du développement rural en Amérique latine. Le
